Emilia-Romagna
Emilia-Romagna travel: Bologna, Modena, Parma, and the food valley.
Emilia-Romagna is Italy's food capital. Bologna, Parma, Modena, and Reggio Emilia form a gastronomic corridor that produces Parmigiano Reggiano, prosciutto di Parma, balsamic vinegar, tortellini, and ragu. A food-focused trip here is one of the best experiences Italy offers, and it costs less than you expect because the region is not on most international tourists' radar.
Bologna makes the best base. The city is walkable, the food market and osterie are concentrated in the old centre, and day trips to Parma (1 hour), Modena (30 minutes), and Ravenna (1 hour 15 minutes) are easy by train. Accommodation is significantly cheaper than Florence or Rome, with quality apartments available for 80 to 120 euros per night direct.
The Adriatic coast from Rimini to Ravenna offers a different experience: wide sandy beaches, family-friendly resorts, and a nightlife scene in Rimini and Riccione. Ravenna's Byzantine mosaics are a UNESCO site that deserves a full day. Our Emilia-Romagna guides cover the food trail, coastal stays, and the best direct-booking agriturismi in the hills between Parma and Bologna.

People also ask
Is Bologna worth visiting for food?
Bologna is arguably Italy best food city. Tortellini, ragu, mortadella, Parmigiano, crescentina, and lambrusco are all from here. The Quadrilatero market area and Via del Pratello are the best eating streets. Budget 15 to 25 euros for a full meal with wine.
How many days do I need in Emilia-Romagna?
Three to four days minimum: two in Bologna for food and the city, one day trip to Parma for Parmigiano and prosciutto factory visits, and optionally one day in Modena for balsamic vinegar and the Enzo Ferrari Museum.
Is Rimini just a beach resort?
Rimini has excellent beaches and nightlife, but the old town has a Roman arch, a Malatesta temple, and a genuine Italian city centre. Ravenna, 45 minutes away, has the best Byzantine mosaics outside Istanbul. The combination makes a strong 3 to 4 day beach-plus-culture trip.
What is the best time to visit Emilia-Romagna?
September to November for food festivals, truffle season, and the grape harvest. Spring (April to May) is pleasant and uncrowded. Summer is hot and humid in the Po Valley but perfect for the Adriatic coast.
Can I visit Parmigiano and prosciutto factories?
Yes. Both require advance booking. Parmigiano creameries offer morning visits (usually 9 to 10am) for 5 to 10 euros. Prosciutto ageing houses in Langhirano near Parma offer guided tours for 10 to 15 euros. Our guide lists the best factories accepting English-language visitors.
