Naples
Naples travel, eating, and direct-booking stays in Spaccanapoli, Chiaia, and Vomero.
Naples is Italy's most misunderstood city. The chaotic streets, graffiti, and reputation for petty crime put off cautious travellers, but those who come find the best pizza in the world, the most atmospheric old town in Italy, and a city that feels more alive than anywhere else on the peninsula. Naples is also the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Ischia, Pompeii, and Herculaneum.
Accommodation in Naples is cheap by Italian standards. A quality apartment in the historic centre (Spaccanapoli, Quartieri Spagnoli, or near Via dei Tribunali) runs 60 to 100 euros per night, and direct booking with licensed hosts saves another 15 to 20 percent. The city has cleaned up significantly since 2020, and the centro storico UNESCO zone now has pedestrianised streets and better lighting.
Our Naples guides cover the neighbourhood decision (stay in the centro storico for food and atmosphere, Chiaia for upscale calm, Vomero for a residential base above the chaos), the pizza pilgrimage trail, day trips to Pompeii and the coast, and the ferry options to the islands. We also cover the Cumana train to Pozzuoli and the Phlegraean Fields, one of the most underrated archaeological zones in Italy.
