Getting around: Metro A stops at Spagna (north) and Barberini (east). Most of Centro Storico is pedestrianised, so walking is fastest. Buses 40 and 64 connect Termini to the Vatican via Centro Storico.

Water: Rome's public drinking fountains (nasoni) are everywhere and the water is excellent. Look for small iron fountains with a constantly running stream. Block the spout with your finger and water shoots from the hole on top.

Toilets: Public toilets are rare. Use cafe toilets (buy an espresso first, EUR 1-1.50 at the bar). McDonald's on Piazza di Spagna has free, clean toilets.

Budget: A sit-down lunch: EUR 12-18. A quick pizza al taglio: EUR 3-5. Espresso at the bar: EUR 1.20. Espresso sitting down: EUR 3-5. Aperitivo with snacks: EUR 8-15.

Pickpockets: Most active around the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and on bus 64. Keep valuables in front pockets or a crossbody bag. Don't put your phone on the table at restaurants.
